In aerospace applications, the use of proper alloy can be a matter of life and death.  All metallic components built into an airframe or jet engine must have 100% certainty that the correct alloy has been used.  In some cases, the wrong alloy can lead to unexpected corrosion, airframe failure, and resulting safety failures. Careful, systematic analysis of aerospace alloy components is essential to safety.

Major alloy families used in typical aerospace applications include:

·  Aluminum for skins on the airplane

·  Titanium and stainless steel for the frame and engine components

·  Nickel / Cobalt super-alloys for jet engine components

Handheld XRF with a Silicon Drift Detector (SDD) is ideal for measuring all of these aerospace alloy classes. Many of these alloys contain magnesium (Mg), Aluminum (Al), and Silicon (Si). The SDD can measure these light elements. In addition, the resolution of the SDD provides the best analysis of difficult-to-analyze super-alloys. The XRF analyzer is an easy-to-use system that allows a completely nondestructive analysis of parts that are about to be put into service or parts that are currently in service.
